Solar Panels for Businesses in Ireland: Reducing Commercial Electricity Costs

For Irish businesses, electricity is a significant operating cost.

Solar PV gives businesses the opportunity to generate renewable electricity directly at their own premises and reduce the amount of electricity they need to purchase from the grid.

Why commercial solar is growing: businesses are facing increasing pressure to control operating costs, improve energy efficiency, meet sustainability targets, reduce carbon emissions and demonstrate ESG progress. Solar can contribute to all of these objectives.

How does commercial solar work? Solar PV panels generate electricity during daylight hours. That electricity can be used directly by the business to power equipment, lighting, heating and cooling systems, IT infrastructure and other electrical loads. The value of a commercial solar system depends heavily on how much of the generated electricity is used on site.

What businesses are suitable for solar? Commercial solar may be suitable for warehouses, offices, retail businesses, manufacturing facilities, hotels, farms, schools, community buildings, sports facilities and logistics sites. Large roofs and significant daytime electricity consumption can create particularly strong opportunities.

Are there grants for commercial solar in Ireland? Yes. The SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant provides financial support for eligible businesses and other qualifying organisations installing solar PV. The scheme is available to organisations including businesses, agricultural operations, public bodies, schools, community centres and non-profit organisations. Current grant support can reach up to €162,600, depending on system size and scheme requirements. (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland)

How large can a commercial solar system be? Under the current SEAI scheme, grant support is available for eligible systems up to 1,000kWp. Larger projects may require additional consideration around planning, grid connection and project design. (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland)

What should businesses consider before installing solar? A commercial solar project should start with an energy assessment. Key questions include: how much electricity does the business use annually; when is the electricity used; how much suitable roof or land is available; is the roof structurally suitable; are there shading issues; what is the likely self-consumption rate; is battery storage required; and what grant support may be available?
