Battery energy storage

Commercial battery storage from single-cabinet units to containerised BESS — shifting solar into evening load, cutting peak demand and holding critical processes through an outage.

  • LFP chemistry as standard
  • Cabinet systems from 30 kWh to containerised MWh-scale
  • Peak shaving, load shifting and backup modes
  • Fire strategy and siting guidance

What a battery is actually paid for

Three things: moving solar generation from midday into evening load, reducing the site's peak demand charge, and keeping critical load alive through an outage. Only the first two show up as recurring savings — value the third as risk reduction, not as revenue.

Sizing

A battery only earns on the energy that passes through it. Sizing follows the daily surplus after direct use, not the size of the array. Our calculator models a modest self-consumption uplift and shows the incremental payback for the battery on its own, so it can be judged separately from the PV.

Siting, fire and ventilation

Commercial storage needs a considered location: separation distances, ventilation, access for the fire service and an agreed fire strategy. Bring this into the design early — it is far cheaper than relocating a cabinet after commissioning.

Tariff dependency

Storage economics move with the spread between day and night unit rates and with capacity charges. A contract renewal can change the case in either direction, so we model against your current contract and flag the sensitivity rather than assuming a fixed spread for 25 years.

Ireland: regulatory & commercial notes

These apply to Ireland only and do not transfer to the other market.

Connection
Storage that can export needs to be declared to ESB Networks. Export-limited or non-export configurations are common where connection capacity is constrained.
Grant treatment
Battery storage is not covered by the SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant in the way PV capacity is — treat the battery as unsupported capital expenditure unless a scheme specifically applies.
